I've "rescued" a group of six photographs belonging to the MILLER – CARPENTER – JOHNSTON – DANFORTH - KERR Family including:
1 - Richard MILLER, taken at the Fred Bremer Studio in Greenville, MI sometime in the 1870's or 1880's, in his 50's or 60's, note "Honorary"
2 - Nancy CARPENTER MILLER, taken at the Fred Bremer Studio in Greenville, MI sometime in the 1870's or 1880's, in her 50's or 60's, note "Wife of Honorary Richard MILLER"
3 - Chester A. MILLER, taken at the Sharpsteen Studio in Grand Rapids or Lansing, MI, 1890's or early 1900's, in his 40's or 50's, note "son of Honorary Richard MILLER
4 - Florence JOHNSTON MILLER, taken at the Sharpsteen Studio in Grand Rapids or Lansing, MI, 1890's or early 1900's, in her 30's or 40's, note "wife of Chester MILLER and daughter-in-law of Honorary Richard MILLER"
5 – Helen DANFORTH KERR, taken at the Browning Studio in Portland, OR in the early 1900’s with Helen likely in her 30’s at the time, “Cousin” is written on the back.
6 – Lusina MILLER DANFORTH, taken at the Rembrandt Studio in Portland, OR in the early 1900’s with Lusina likely in her 50’s or 60’s at the time.
Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this group of family members:
Richard Church MILLER was b. 17 Apr 1820 in Hartland, CT, to parents Isaac Denison MILLER (1799-1857) and Deborah CHURCH (1799-1868) who were married 20 Feb 1819. Richard was one of 11 children born to this couple including, Richard Church; Jane Angeline; Amelia; Emily; Lester Recompense; Martha Edwina; Mary Adelia; Enoch or Enosh; Elijah Talcott; Lucinda or Lucina Elmira; and Adeline Deborah MILLER, all born between 1820 and 1841. Richard married Nancy C. CARPENTER (1820-1898) on 26 Dec 1841 in Orion Township, Oakland Co., MI and they had three children including, Oscar Carpenter MILLER (1844-1925); Chester Austin MILLER (1846-1928); and Helen Aurora MILLER (1851-1873). Richard died 5 Apr 1898 in Greenville, MI and is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Greenville, MI. Richard was a farmer moving to Fairplans, MI in 1854 and then to Greenville, MI. He was elected to the Michigan State Legislature in 1871 and again in 1873.
Nancy Carter CARPENTER was b. 5 Jun 1820 in Canada to parents Stephen B. CARPENTER (1778-1854) and Hannah Margaret TAFT (1782-1857) who were married 30 Jan 1801 in Uxbridge, MA. Nancy was one of 10 children born to this family including Eunice; Orsmus or Erasmus T.; Joseph Rawson; Charlotte Taft; Charles A.; Mary Taft; Hannah Taft; Nancy Carter; Henrietta; and George CARPENTER, all born between 1802 and 1825. Nancy was brought to Uxbridge, MA as an infant and then moved with her family to Orion, MI when she was 18 years old. She was a prominent member of the Temperance Women’s group. Nancy died 15 May 1898 in Greenville, MI and is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Greenville as well.
Chester Austin MILLER was b. 30 Apr 1846 in Orion, MI to these parents and married Florence E. JOHNSTON (1850-1933) on 8 Mar 1871 in Oakland Co., MI. They had one daughter, Elnora Belle MILLER b. 1877 who they adopted. Chester died in Los Angeles, CA on 18 Dec 1928.
Florence E. JOHNSTON was b. 13 Jul 1850 in Johnston, OH to parents Herman JOHNSTON and Phebe J. GLEASON. Florence was there only child. Florence died 2 Feb 1933 in Los Angeles, CA.
Helen Adelaide DANFORTH was b. 20 Nov 1873 in Michigan to parents Vanness G. DANFORTH (1836-1921) and Lucina A. MILLER (1837-1907). Helen was one of 6 children born to this couple including a brother DeWitt W. DANFORTH (1866-1924). Helen married Saxton Patton KERR (1857-1914) and they had a son, George Saxon KERR (1894-1970) and two daughters Marguerite Emily KERR and Florence Louise KERR HOEFFEL. Helen died 1 May 1953 in Los Angeles, CA and is buried in the Riverview Cemetery in Portland, OR.
Lucina A. MILLER was b. 14 Apr 1837 in Pontiac, MI to parents Isaac D. and Deborah MILLER noted above and she married Vanness G. DANFORTH in Greenville or Eureka, MI on 6 Dec 1860 and they had six children including, Dewitt W.; Florence Alma; Lloy A.; Helen Adelaide; Maude Ethel; and Mandly DANFORTH all born between 1865 and 1875. They moved to Portland, Oregon in 1898.
