NYE - SNIFFEN - BRISTOL Family Marriage Certificate and Letter

Shelley Cardiel

I've recovered the original marriage certificate for Lewis Alfred NYE and Eugenia Rex SNIFFEN who were married in Brooklyn, NY on the 30th of May 1919.  The wedding was witnessed by Marjory B. RUGG and Charlotte P. BOYNTON and officiated by Nehemiah BOYNTON from the Clinton Avenue Congregational Church.  Also included with the certificate is a letter from the Minister written to Lewis at the General Hospital in Eastview, NY.  He talks about him convalescing rapidly and will soon settle into their own home.

Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding the couple:

Lewis Alfred NYE was b. 1 Mar 1899 in Sandwich, MA to parents George Henry NYE (1872-1954) and Cora Mae or May BRISTOL (1876-1959) who were married 19 Feb 1893 in New Haven, CT.  Lewis was one of 5 children including Frances Marion; George Olin; Bertha Amelia; Lewis Alfred; and Lillian Bristol NYE, all born between 1893 and 1900.  Lewis married Eugenia “Jennie” R. SNIFFEN (1895-1977), and they had three children including Charles Warren or Rex; Barbara Eugenia; and Lois Alfreda NYE, all born between 1920 and 1924.  Lewis died 6 Nov 1986 in Long Beach or Los Angeles, CA and is buried in the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.

Eugenia Rex SNIFFEN was b. 13 Feb 1895 in Port Chester, NY to parents John Milton SNIFFEN (1860-1900) and Ida Elizabeth REX (1862-1941) who were married 24 Mar 1884.  Eugenia was one of 11 children born to this couple including Daisy; Anna Louise; Catherine Elizabeth; Charles Harvey; Emma Bible; Hattie; John Milton; Eugenia “Jennie”; Harry Joseph; Mary; and Baby Boy SNIFFEN, all born between 1881 and 1900.  Eugenia died 7 Jan 1977 in Orange Co., CA and she is buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA.

I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that the documents can be passed onto family.  If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me.

HULL Family Photograph

Shelley Cardiel

I’ve recovered an old photograph of E. A. HULL who is photographed along with his church in Taftville, CT in 1906.  Mr. HULL appears to be in his 30’s or 40’s at the time the photograph was taken.  Mr. HULL sends the photograph with a note to Miss Lila STILLWELL in Willimantic, CT inviting her to the dedication of the church in January 1906.  The photograph is sent from Taftville, CT on 15 Jan 1906.  The dedication is to be held on the next Saturday and he’d like her to come on Friday or Saturday and stay until Sunday.

I don’t know the name of the church, however if is somewhat smaller in size, appears to have a single tower in the center of the entry to the church with a high arched window and roof peak to the right of the entry and tower.  I am hoping to return this photograph to his family and would appreciate you contacting me if you are a member of this HULL Family or know someone who might be.

Thanks,

Shelley

Re: Query re Mary Grant Cecil #Middlesex

Chris Klemmer

Douglass,

From indexes online at CT State Library,
MARY CECIL died 1938-07-12 WATERBURY
DANIEL CECIL married MARY GRANT 1934-06-21 FARMINGTON

From city directories, it appears they met in Waterbury and lived together in Middletown starting in 1934.
See the attachment for citations and details. If further explanation is needed, don't hesitate to ask.

I suggest contacting Town clerks in Farmington and Waterbury for Mary's marriage and death records and possible children.
CT State Department of Health is another option. Vital records are not at the State Library.
Farmington Town Clerk, https://www.farmington-ct.org/departments/town-clerk
Waterbury Town Clerk, http://www.waterburyct.org/townclerk
CT Department of Health, https://portal.ct.gov/DPH

If you don't mind me asking, where are you researching from?
Are these towns accessible to you?

Best wishes,
Chris

Query re Mary Grant Cecil #Middlesex

Douglass Grant

Mary Catherine Grant, b. 1900 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, Canada (d/o James & Dollena), migrated to the US in 1920 and married Daniel Cecil (s/o Carmine & Rose) on a date not yet discovered.  She died in Middletown on or about 12 July 1938, and her body was returned to NS for burial.  Her widowed husband was living with his family in Waterbury in 1940.  There is no evidence of children from the marriage.  Can anyone help me with the date of their marriage, or any information about the circumstances of her death?

Re: Looking for obituaries - Petrauskas

Try contacting libraries in the towns where each of these people died. This has worked well for me. Please note,  they sometimes charge a modest look-up fee.
The CT State Library is also a good resource at https://ctstatelibrary.org/contact-us/email-us/ .
